Front Porch Replacement
This project was done in early 2024 for a house that wasn’t mine, and the original front porch was a 20-year-old build that was rotting out. The owner wanted something that would last a lifetime, so the goal was to rebuild it properly rather than patch the old structure and hope for the best.
The porch had no real footers, the framing was tired, and the stairs and landing were all part of the same failure point. I tore it down to the essentials and rebuilt it from the ground up with better drainage, better support, and a material choice that was built for long-term durability.
The List
| Status | Category | Task | Time | Difficulty | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ✅ | 💣 Demolition | Tear off the old porch and stairs | 1-2 days | Medium | The rotten structure was failing in a few different spots, so it had to come out before anything new could be built. |
| ✅ | 🏗️ Foundation | Pour new footers | 2 days | Hard | There were no proper footers under the original porch, which was a major structural issue. |
| ✅ | 🔨 Framing | Rebuild the deck framing and landing | 3 days | Hard | New framing gave the porch a solid base and a better layout. |
| ✅ | 🧰 Weatherproofing | Install butyl tape and flashing | 1 day | Medium | This was important at the house connection to keep water out of the framing and ledger. |
| ✅ | 🔨 Decking | Install Trex decking | 2 days | Medium | Picture frame, standard trex full run layout |
| ✅ | 🔨 Stairs | Build new stringers and stairs | 3 day | Hard | The original stairs were part of the rot and had to be fully replaced. |
| ✅ | 🛡️ Railing | Add railing and finish details | 2 day | Medium | This made the porch safer and cleaned up the final look. |
| ✅ | 🎨 Finish | Final cleanup and detail work | 1 day | Easy | The new porch was set up to be a durable, practical entry instead of a quick repair. |
Key Notes
The main issue was not just bad decking. The original porch had been built with little structural backup, and once we started tearing it apart, the rot and weak framing were obvious. It needed a real rebuild, not a repair.
I paid close attention to water management. The new deck ledger, flashing, and butyl tape were all part of the plan because the porch sits right against the house. That kind of detailing matters a lot when a project is intended to last for decades.
The final work included the new landing, stair layout, and rails, so the porch felt like a complete front-entry upgrade instead of just a replacement deck. It was a straightforward rebuild.
